A photo from the city of Kabul, Afghanistan, shows images of women at a Kabul beauty salon being painted over as the Taliban took over the city.

The photo was shared on Twitter by Lotfullah Najafizada, the head of the Afghan news outlet ToloNews TV.

There was no official confirmation as to why the images of the women were covered up, but it is likely that it was done so to appease the Taliban

The Taliban stormed Kabul on Sunday, August 15, taking over most of the country, and seized control of the presidential palace.

This put the terrorist group back in power 20 years after they were driven out by US-led forces.

When the Taliban last ruled Afghanistan, they forced women to cover their faces and banned them from schools and workplaces.

Women were punished if they didn’t cover their faces. They were also barred from leaving their homes unless they were accompanied by a male relative.

Most recently, in July 2021 precisely, as Taliban insurgents were seizing territory from government forces across Afghanistan, Taliban fighters walked into the offices of Azizi Bank and ordered the women working there to leave.

The gunmen escorted them to their homes and told them not to return to their jobs. The Taliban suggested that they could tell their male relatives to take their place at the bank.

There are concerns for women’s autonomy in Afghanistan as the Taliban returns to power.

Many women in Afghanistan now say they are afraid of how they will be treated during Taliban rule and fear the loss of their freedoms and rights.

Women who worked as politicians or activists also said they now fear reprisals.

Some women in Kabul started buying burqas that cover their entire bodies, including their faces, as the Taliban approached the city.
