According to the federal government, the nation’s recurrent flood catastrophes can only be prevented through regular investments made over a 30-year period, The Nation says.
After the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on October 26, which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Minister of Water Resources Engr. Suleiman Adamu said that despite the early warning system in place, numerous capital-intensive initiatives still need to be carried out in the future to prevent the catastrophe.
The government can only reduce flood risk, according to Adamu, who underlined that efforts to prevent flooding are not something that can be accomplished in a single term in office.
He also disclosed that the current administration is already engaged in the creation of a master plan for flood management, which will take at least three years to finish.
The Minister, who claimed that many flood victims disregarded evacuation orders, also attributed the country’s severe flooding this year to soil degradation and tree cutting.
